What if I Stumble?

For those who remember DC Talk, they came out with a song called What if I Stumble, and the chorus went, “What if I stumble? What if I fall? What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all? Will the love continue, when the walk becomes a crawl? What if stumble? What if I fall?”

And this can be a challenge, for everyone, even Christians.

For as Christians, we know that we are a redeemed sinners, and there are still sins we struggle with… there are still areas we fall short.

Not only that, but there are times when we are poor witnesses. There are times when love doesn’t reign in our lives… times when our lifestyles don’t match our words.

If you are going through a season like this, a season of struggle, I hope Jesus’ words to Peter can be an encouragement…

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32 NIV

Jesus doesn’t say “if” but “when.”

Peter was adamant that it wouldn’t happen. He was convinced he would stand strong. But life has a way of throwing curve balls. Fortunately, even a brief moment of denial didn’t disqualify him. Jesus told him what to do “when” he turns back.

Our desire is to do everything right, but unfortunately we are human. We will make mistakes. We will sin. God knows this. I don’t say this so anyone will think that we can go on sinning because He will forgive us. God hates sin, and we should too. We should do everything we can to avoid it and seek to be holy, because the Word of God calls us to holiness.

“Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” 1 Peter 1:13-16 NIV

So we strive to be holy, but we also know that when we mess up and sin, He will forgive us. How amazing is this!

Lord, we ask You to help us be holy. But we also ask You to help us when stumble and fall, when we sin (regardless of how big or small). Help us to run back to You, knowing that when we ask You for forgiveness You give it to us. And may we become more and more like You each and every day. In Jesus’ name we pray…
