The Light of the World

Last year I got the opportunity to go to this amazing place in South Carolina to see the sunrise with Caitie. It was a chapel in the mountains that offered a view of this amazing sunrise over the mountains. But in order to see the sunrise, we had to go in the middle of the night. This picture was taken at 7:43 AM, but we were there before 5 AM, in the pitch black. All we saw were the flashlights that people were using to see.

When things are that dark, it doesn’t take much light to begin to illuminate things. In John chapter 8 Jesus refers to Himself as the “Light of the world.”

Jesus is the Light of the world

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12 NIV

One of the great things about the light is that you can see. Without light you end up banging into things. It is difficult to get around. But without the light you can also do things that others won’t see because they are not visible. The dark is often a breeding ground for sin.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, sin is illuminated and we can walk away from it. But for some, the desire is to stay in the dark. A hidden life is a dangerous life. But when we allow the Holy Spirit to shine His light on us, we are more apt to live as we are called to live.

Not only are we able to receive the Light (Jesus), but we are called to be light as well.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matt 5:14-16 NIV

Being the light in a dark world may not make us popular. It may not be comfortable. But His light will keep us safe, and ultimately bring glory to God.

Lord, let Your light shine in me, that I might do what is right, and let Your light shine through me, that people may be drawn to You, and so that You may be glorified through me, I pray. In Jesus’ name…
