How often do we speak about the Lord being first in our lives, yet have other things that we put before God? The reality is that we can do good things for the Lord and still not have our hearts turned fully to the Lord. In 2 Kings 10 we see this with Jehu.
“The Lord said to Jehu, ‘Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.’ Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.” 2 Kings 10:30-31 NIV
He had great zeal for the Lord, but still didn’t worship God with his whole heart. He also allowed the people to worship God and other things. Are we different?
Today, it seems like the idols that we fall prey to are money, hobbies, family, and other things that take the place of God.
I wonder if money is the biggest challenge for people here in America.
In case you weren’t aware, Jesus spoke about money and finances than any other individual topic (multiple sources). In Matthew 6, Jesus said that:
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matt. 6:24 NIV
What does this look like? How many of us hold off on giving to God what is God’s because we are concerned that we don’t or won’t have enough?
How many of us have other small idols that we continue to worship? Jehu’s kingdom shrank because he didn’t worship the Lord wholeheartedly. I wonder how many of us deal with the same things?
Lord, reveal those small idols we continue to hold, that we might let You destroy them in our hearts. That You might be the sole Lord of our lives. In Jesus’ name…
