Faith in Action

There is so much to gain from Philippians chapter 4. We tend to focus on the call to “Rejoice in the Lord always,” to “pray about everything “and to “think about these things (things that are true, lovely, pure etc.).” We even see a little bit further the call to be content in all circumstances.

A sermon series could be preached on just Philippians chapter 4. But there is another line that should not be ignored…

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable---if anything is excellent or praiseworthy---think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me---put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Phi. 4:8-9 NIV (Bold added)

It is a call to put good works into practice.

These are the things we see in Paul. Paul’s life was faith in action. He didn’t just know the right things to do, but he did them. And he doesn’t just tell them to just think about them, and pray about them (although those things are important too), but to put them into practice.

It is good to think about things that are lovely, but we should desire to take the next step and put these things into action. To live them out. Not that we will gain salvation through what we do, but we should desire to live out our faith because we are saved. Faith in action.

Lord, help me to go beyond thinking about wonderful things, and help me to live out my faith, to put my faith into action. Help with by Your Spirit, I pray, in Jesus’ name…
