How Quickly We Turn…

It doesn’t take long for us as fickle human beings to change our minds. We can be all in one moment, then when things appear to change, we shift gears and move in a different direction, often without looking to the Lord for guidance.

Look at how quickly the Israelites turned…

“As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, ‘Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!’” Exo 14:10-12 NIV

God has spared them, He is leading them, yet the sign of the Egyptian army is enough to have them quake in their boots.

But are we any different?

I have seen people who appear to be committed to what God is doing, up and leave without confirmation from anyone but themselves, moving on because they believe things have changed.

In the multiethnic church movement, we have all heard stories of churches that seemed to move in this direction, only to step away when the going got hard (and it will get hard if you are doing it right).

Maybe we get started and then realize that it requires more compromise than we thought. It requires relinquishing more control than we are comfortable with, and we begin to look at different options.

It is easy to look and think we see greener pastures, but what does the Lord desire for us? If it is truly to move on, won’t He confirm that by others as well? Moses spoke well when He said,

“If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” Exo 33:15 NIV

Lord, keep us strong to stay when You desire for us to stay, even if others advise us to go. May we not turn until the day comes when You call us to go, and may we then go with You, for it is Your presence we desire. In Jesus’ Name…
