How is it that we’ve gotten to the point at which following Jesus is nothing more than saying a prayer and then going on and living life? This is far from scriptural.
In today’s reading Luke chapter 9, Jesus says,
“Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.’”
Luke 9:23-24 NIV
To follow Jesus, he expects us to 1. deny ourselves, 2. carry our cross daily, and 3. to follow him. The only way that we can do this is with his help, and by understanding who He is and what He has sacrificed for us.
Lord, help us to remember who You are, that You sacrificed everything for us, and that you desire a relationship with us. Having a relationship with the creator of the universe, along with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, is worth all that we can sacrifice.
