The Compassion of Christ

In John Chapter 11 we read about Lazarus being raised from the dead, and the power that Jesus had even over death.  But here we see so much more.  Here we find the shortest verse in the Bible, John 11:35

“Jesus wept.”

And in this shortest verse, we also see an important attribute of God… compassion.  Jesus knew that in the raising of Lazarus from the dead, especially after 4 days, that it would help people see just who He is.  But people He cared about would also see loss.

Jesus saw them in pain, and it moved Him as well.  There are times when we are suffering and in pain, and it is important to remember that Jesus sees.  As we weep, as we suffer, Jesus is moved by our pain.  This passage helps us to see that Jesus weeps with us.  He doesn’t just look down on us with a heart of stone, but He feels for us.

Lord, help us to remember that You are compassionate.  You feel our pain, and grieve when we grieve.  Thank You for understanding us, and for being there for us (even when we don’t understand).  May this truth help us to trust You even more.
