In reading Luke 14, Jesus shares the parable of the Great Banquet, which is a response to someone’s statement about the blessings of being a part of the great feast in heaven.
In the parable, there are many who were considered worthy of the invitation, but for many different reasons they were not ready when the time came. They had other things that were of higher priority. Family and possessions had them request to be excused.
This was a direct shot at the Pharisees and religious leaders, who although they were supposedly all about God and His kingdom, were not ready to embrace the kingdom now that it was in their midst.
And what about us? Where do we stand as God calls us? Maybe He is calling us to share our faith… Maybe He is calling us to step up in one form or another… maybe he is calling us to make Him more of a priority.
As He calls us into a closer relationship, as He calls us to do the work that we were created for..
For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” - Ephesians 2:10 NIV
Are we ready, or are we going to have reasons or excuses to keep from following Him?
The reasons that Jesus gives for someone to avoid the banquet could seem justified unless we realize that God is our greatest priority, and His desires should always come before our own.
