When I was growing up in church, I learned this simple song that I have never forgotten. The chorus went like this… “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
If you have a light, you don’t hide it, you don’t let someone blow it out, and you keep it going as long as you need light. These are a part of the verses to the song
In reading Luke 11, this song came to mind.
“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Luke 11:33-36 NIV
If we have the light of Christ in us, then we want to make sure that it can be seen. Today, it seems like society wants that light hidden or put out. Lord, You made it clear in Your word that this is how things would be. Yet we are called to be Your light in this world.
It is hard to do things that we shouldn’t do when the light shines on those things. This is true for us and for those around us. We can’t try to keep some rooms of our life in the dark. We also need to be willing to shine that light into the dark aspects of our society, and this won’t make us popular.
