Can’t Have One Without the Other…

Love and obedience, these two words are linked in the Bible, and more so in John’s writing. It is seen in John’s Gospel (chapters 14 and 15), and throughout his epistles.

“But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him.“ 1 John 2:5a NIV84 (God’s love, instead of the love of God, is more accurate from the original Greek text, which is why I referenced the 1984 version).

Another verse to consider is “Whoever does the will of God lives forever.” (Vs. 17). We can only do God’s will if we obey Him, and we will obey Him if we love Him. Without love it will be impossible to obey Him, as we will eventually seek to do our own will.

Without love it will be impossible to obey Him, as we will eventually seek to do our own will.

And this can be a real battle. We have our will, our agenda, our plans, and our desires that will be in conflict with God’s unless we are completely in tune with Him. Our goal as Christians should be obedience to His will in EVERYTHING!

Our goal as Christians should be obedience to His will in EVERYTHING!

As we remember what He did for us, the price He paid for our sins, that we might be considered righteous before Him, His great love for us should fill us with a desire to return that love back to Him. And our love for Him should bring a desire to please Him, and we please Him by obeying Him.

Lord, help me to truly love You, that I might obey You and do Your will. For if I am not driven to obey You because of Your love for me, I will fail. With Your help, I can love You back in a way that is pleasing to You, for this is my heart’s desire. In Jesus’ name…
